Comparing MCMC and INLA for disease mapping with Bayesian hierarchical models

چکیده
Introduction Bayesian hierarchical models with random effects are one of the most widely used methods in modern disease mapping, as a superior alternative to standardized ratios. These models are traditionally fitted through Markov Chain Monte Carlo sampling (MCMC). Due to the nature of the hierarchical models and random effects, the convergence of MCMC is very slow and unpredictable. Recently, Integrated Nested Laplace Approximation was developed as an alternative method to fit Bayesian hierarchical models of the latent Gaussian class.

In this report we apply Integrated Nested Laplace approximation (INLA) to a series of multivariate stochastic volatility models. These are a useful construct in financial time series analysis and can be formulated as latent Gaussian Markov Random Field (GMRF) models. This popular class of models is characterised by a GMRF as the second stage of the hierarchical structure and a vector of hyperpa...

Animal models are generalized linear mixed model (GLMM) used in evolutionary biology and animal breeding to identify the genetic part of traits. Integrated Nested Laplace Approximation (INLA) is a methodology for making fast non-sampling based Bayesian inference for hierarchical Gaussian Markov models. In this paper we demonstrate that the INLA methodology can be used for many versions of Bayes...
متن کاملNetwork meta-analysis with integrated nested Laplace approximations.
Analyzing the collected evidence of a systematic review in form of a network meta-analysis (NMA) enjoys increasing popularity and provides a valuable instrument for decision making. Bayesian inference of NMA models is often propagated, especially if correlated random effects for multiarm trials are included. The standard choice for Bayesian inference is Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) sampling,...

متن کاملIntegrated Nested Laplace Approximation for Bayesian Nonparametric Phylodynamics
The goal of phylodynamics, an area on the intersection of phylogenetics and population genetics, is to reconstruct population size dynamics from genetic data. Recently, a series of nonparametric Bayesian methods have been proposed for such demographic reconstructions. These methods rely on prior specifications based on Gaussian processes and proceed by approximating the posterior distribution o...
